Midi files? Don't think so. And if they would exist, they would sound shit, since most distributed midifiles use the standard soundset found on most souncards... which is total poo

i don't think they're a bad thing, you can use them to look at how other tunes have structered drums and how producers have created certain rhythm's and 'feels' for a track. Just another production tool really......

Yep, but you won't escape using them. That's the main problem.
I have meet dnb midis, but very short - usually a beat, some pattern and such. Not full tune.
I get what Cynik tries to say and I agree - but I think that teaching midis should be released under free licence, and everyone will know them and learn BASICS from them. Like a never released tune, which gives the intro to the genre producing. Dunno. We might construct something, eh Cyn?

yeah sure why not
I'll give away then any of my older tracks in midi, they aint ever gonna be released - but I see the man is looking for some acclaimed hits?
btw Surya, midis I exported (I use them to get a track from a mate using Fruity to Reason and vice versa) contained some automation at correct places even, I'm pretty sure the master volume of some channels were read correctly

I guess there could be some use for it. But I think its just another way of avoiding working out for yourself.
If you like how a drum rhythm works, you can be sure that it wouldnt sound the same on a midi track.
Also, as far as things as structures go, thats more than easy to work out just by listening.
I just cant really see what the point would be.
Half of making a tune is the sounds and how theyre used. So many tunes work just because theyve got a really standout synth tone or something. A hook almost. I think that something like a hook or getting the right sounds is not something that you can work out from examing a midi track, but jst from shit loads of practice.
You hear stories of record companies having an analysis of every number 1 hit ever, and this is used as a "how to make a number 1". The result is that so many tunes come out sounding exactly the same, all rubbish. I hate the way that there is one decent tune, and then an avalanche of very similar sounding tunes or even remixes. Its as though people are just trying to catch a little bit of that glory, basking in reflected praise.
I dunno, maybe I'm getting a little worked up over this, but I just think that a good tune is a good tune and should just be left as that. The more you try to analyse and take apart, the it looses its impact.

There is even software that can analyse music and tell if it's gonna be a hit. But it's only 80% accurate. I know Sony uses it as part of their criteria to descide which tunes to take and which not.
