So this shit as probably been asked before but what the eh ...

What synthesizers do the pro´s tend to favor !?
Or better yet ...
What synthesizers do you prefer or recommend !?

I´m using the M-audio keyrig 49 at the minute.
Which is rather basic at the best.
Pitch and mod wheel control, volume slider and an edit button ...
Not forgetting the -4 / +4 octaves buttons.

It´s done me no wrong so far but I would like one with more interface buttons.
I was thinking of maybe the axiom 61 some time in the future.

What you are using isn't a synth, it's a midi keyboard.
Preferred synths: Albino, Massive, Blue, Predator, Zeta

Technically I know my keyrig isn´t a synth as it has no mod buttons, knobs etc ...
It has no midi ins or outs and can´t produce sounds without software being used.
It is 100% usb bus controlled.

But a synth comes in quite a variety of shapes, designs and sizes ...
Each with their own unique qualities ...

I believe the Korg es1 mk2 I´ve got on loan at the minute is classed as a synth of sorts even though it has no keys.
It´s kind of like programming a pattern in ReDrum on Reason while using the modulation knobs to create sounds.

I think all of the m-audio products are usb bus controlled yet some of the more higher range models can be powered via an ac adapter and can produce their own sounds without the use of software.

Bob moog synths also incorporate usb bus as well as classic midi in, outs into their newer models.
Which I think is really good seeing as it suits both the live musician and the ambitious producer ...
Unlike my own "MIDI KEYBOARD" which has it´s limits. Tongue Wink Big Grin

I hear the Native Instruments (Kontakt etc) are supposed to be sick, a lot of big DnB acts use them - when I've got my head round the more basic ones (ie Malstorm and SubContractor on Reason!) I plan on investing in one of those!

to be honest mate, you don't need those fancy synths to make sick tunes, my mate's ex-roomate is sum dude called Boy Digital (apparently he's doin pretty well on myspace - 400 hits a day!), this guy is 100% on frooty and he's learnt this program inside out to the point where he doesn't need anything else - thats the level of Zen we all wish to acheive - the question is who has the patience and/or the time?! Shocked

Hmmm ...

I have a job and piss poor concentration !!!

ADD anyone ...

I´m learning something new everyday though. ...
The only problem being that everytime I learn something new I forget something old.

Oh well ...

I know I´m trying to use Reason only without the use of pesky ReWire.
Too much hassle in my personal opinion just to be able to use some bloody VsTi´s !

I know we don´t need fancy hardware to make music ...

I borrowed a few Korg synths and samplers and a Roland TR-909 for the week ...
I gave them back today ...
To be honest I´m glad they are gone as they were just cluttering up my personal space and weren´t actually very productive music wise to me ...

The Roland was about as much use as a dead dog ...
What did I need a bloody drum machine for really !? ...
I dunno, I didn´t ask for it ...
HaHa !!!

We have ReDrum and rex files and wav samples and singles shots and loops to create drum beats with !!!

They are much more flexible than the Roland will ever be.
Buggery !

yeah when I first started out all I wanted was as much new software / hardware as possible, in my (then naive) mind I thought thats what would make my sound wicked - only recently when I re-started producing did I come to realise that its more about knowledge and hence ability to manipulate sounds that will allow me to acheive my desired goal.

In early 2000s I actually bought a hardware sampler, along with loads of other stuff that I DO use (with all the money from my first proper paying job) but I also had Cubase SL, this sampler still sits at my place doing absolutely nothing, I now use Cubase for pretty much all of my sampling - its really flexible, I can import stuff in from pretty much anywhere and do most my beat programming / synths / basslines on Reason - couldn't really ask for more in terms of a set up now (apart from one of those Native Instruments!)

sorry - think I may have gone off topic a bit on this one?!

now its not really too much about what synthesisers to use but how to use them.

best thing you can do it to take time to do some reading about how the different types of synthesis work.

I know its not the most exciting reading in the world for some but it'll help you know what you are actually doing with the synth therefore be able to get the best from it and be more likely to create the sounds you have in mind.

That said though a lot of pro's will possibly make a synth sound, sample it, then do further processing to it. Especially the techy, neuro producers.

And thats the route that I want to be gonig down - curently I do use a fair amount of samples and process them loads, my synths definately need work and I'll be sure to catch up on some reading as I'm a big fan of Neuro / Techy stuff among other styles

I suggest you try n get a hold of Cubase and Rewire with Reason, that way you can import some of your audio from Reason into Cubase and use VSTs - that way you have that bit more freedom on processing your sounds with all the various free downloads you can get on the net Big Grin

Buy it you cheap bugger! lol Big Grin think my mate has a copy of SX, will see if I can get it off him (as I bought SL in like 2002 which I still use, but its got that USB key so can only use on 1 pc), but Cubase if defo worth the investment, you get so much out of it, very flexible - I used to hate it when I first got it as had NO clue how it worked, only really started unlocking its potential recently since I re-sarted makin tunes Bigup
