there are basic things you can still do, without the multi-million dollar mastering suite.

quote:
Examples of possible actions taken during mastering:

Edit minor flaws.
Apply noise reduction to eliminate hum and hiss.
Adjust stereo width.
Add ambience.
Equalize audio between tracks.
Adjust volumes.
Dynamic expansion.
Dynamic compression.
Peak limit the tracks.

]
this is adjusting the final mix, usually not during the final mix. if it's done during mixes, then it's not mastering. it would be part of the final mixdown.

but then it's just a terminology and i know that there's someone that knows the terminology much better and will be happy to correct me.

.

sorry but thats crap.

mix first. master later.

if you were to get a track signed to a decent label they will either master it themselves or pay for it to be mastered. if your mix is shit then what they gonna do. you cant polish a turd. if youre using the compressor/limiter on your master while your mixing then your not doing it properly.

correct.

but still EQings a bitch , and Mastering too...

i heared from Throttler (Killing Sheep rec) what he does and i got a real Shock :o then .... to much to mention , soo much work for just the eq and the master.

producing = 20% ideas and composition and picking the right sounds // 80% eq , re-eq , master , sound stuff, objective meaning stuff , final master , ...

:o :'( :crie:

I dont really think any of this is mastering except compression and peak limiting...Not trying to argue just talking on it... The whole point of mastering is that they do compression etc in a very controlled and familiar environment which they know with highly expensive and specialised equipment. The Mix Engineer will be mixing in a room with a mixing desk and other equipment which causes standing waves and other such barriers to creating a perfect mix...If you cant take the room out of the mix you cant take the mix out of the room. Thats what mastering engineers do...

IMO Happy

agreed... which is why you can hear an album that has not been mastered and think it sounds great. mastering is the icing on the cake.

and someone said eq'ing is a bitch... let me add that you should never eq using headphones! some of you like myself might work in restricting environments soundwise which means you need to use headphones. wait until you can get to a place that you can use good moniters and a good room and lots of time.

*this is why most of my tracks are not out for listening... except for the couple on myspace which i mixed similarly to Logistics, he uses very little effects and a bit of correctional eqing and from i understood not alot of mastering.

I mix on my monitor headphones (AKG K-66) and my mixes are usually described as very precise and clean. Maybe it's all about experience. I can now, presumably, make a great mix even on shitty headphones.

mastering is an art unto itself. trust me. we just do some sound boosting with a plug-in or two, and THINK that's all the do.

How to prepare your tracks for the mastering studio < the chronic
Whos a Master in the Mastering side of things??
what does "mastering" contain?
compressing at the end

quote:
Thechronic

Mixdown and mastering are two separate things You do the mixdown first and when that is finished you do the mastering.

Mixdown = applying EQ, dynamic processing (compression, expanding, gating) to single audio channels, making the balance incl volume automation, setting the stereo image (panning) for every channel, applying effects etc..

Mastering = after the mixdown you bounce the track to a stereo WAV file, then apply master compression, EQ, phase correction for mono compatibility, topping/tailing (fade-in, fade-out, inserting or removing silence at the start and end of the track), stereo width correction.

Normally you don't really do mastering for single tunes, it is usually done to several tracks at once for a full-CD, mini-CD, EP release so you get a uniform sound for all tunes on the release before sending it off to the pressing plant.

i use headphones. tell me if my songs are mixed bad or mastered poorly. Sony MDR-V150 20 dollars, and falling apart. love them, baught 3 of them this is number 3 Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin it's whatever you're use to listening on. mastering can get the flaws you can't hear on crappy speakers. pop hisses little flaws that get blurred over.

then allow me to correct myself... do not edit, mix, eq, master on headphones unless you are very familiar with them.

i am a hypocrite... today i rewired a song into nuendo and began eq'ing and mixing ON HEADPHONES! i have a pair of audio technica 30 series... i have no idea how much they cost but they have good freq response and are isolating.

something i've been doing to make sure i don't overdo anything is i check my tracks to my favorite producers songs. so i listen to alot of london elektrcity and logistics to see if i have anything way out of wack. so far stuff has turned out ok... but i wouldn't say it doesn't need any mastering.

very smart, that'sh wo it done. you may notice before live concerts they play a few songs first, that's usually the sound guy getting the mix right to a song he knows.
