just wondereing exactly what is ment by set as children, i have a rough idea, but do not completeley understand it, also how it is done, i am using fl5. cheers in advance

setting children is used to play 2 or more instruments at the same time, like 2 or more synths to get the sound that you want.
to accomplish this u add a layer (channels, add one..., layer)
now select the instruments you want as children and click on set children in the layer channel. et voila, vous avez des enfants

Usually, you set up children by creating them in their mother's womb. 
kidding, setting children is a simple procedure to make two or more instruments play the same notes, or generally, be considered as one instrument.
The procedure is as sssonarrr said. If you have any problems, write back to help you with the detailed instructions.
