eqing & compression... Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Yo..

I'm kinda new here, been traveling the forum for a while and recently signed up. I've been DJing "drum n bass" for about 7 years now and I understand the music, how to make it, patterns etc etc etc... Been into production for about 4 years but never really completed anything because I just can not get my sounds to come through the mix like the pro's do...

I understand drum layering and programming, all the layers needed to make a good bass.. lows mids highs etc etc etc.. but when together they just dont seem to 'gel' or sound as loud/prominant as the tracks that I play in my sets / on the radio. Which I'm sure you know is frustrating and you guys have probably been through this yourselves...

From what I've read it seems to be all about compression and "eqing".. now I've started eqing my loops a bit.. e.g. taking the lows out of kicks and atmospheres etc but I've no idea about frequencies or how to bring the best out of the mix.. it seems to have made a bit of difference but still not to the standard I want so the next thing would be compression? I'm completely stuck with this, no idea how to compress the drums, bass, what I should compress/eq or by how much...

Any help would be much appreciated !!! Smile

http://www.dnbscene.com/article/88-think...ete-eq-tutorial

they cover both compression & eq pretty in detail

Interesting sounds! I like it

btw: I'm glad you started this topic, because I also wanted to know more about eq'ing and shit. For me, mastering a song is the hardest in producing.

Don't worry, master it as good as you can.
If your tune gets signed it will be mastered by a pro anyway.
If the label doesn't offer a mastering service you should be very suspicious Happy

thanks for the helpful links guys! I'm doing a D&B track right now and will definitely read up on all this soon. So far I'm progressing quite well with the track but I'm sure as soon as it comes to the finer points of mixing/eqing etc to make the track stand out, I'll need all the info I can get...

most importantly aim to perfect the mixdown process- NOT mastering..

If you master something- then its get signed- the label will want the mixdown anyway for the pro mastering guy.

Mastering is icing on the cake, but the mixdown IS the cake.

noticed you said something about eq'ing your loops, you shouldn't ever eq multiple sounds together because everything has to be done individually, you don't want to eq a drum loop and cut the highs because sure this might accomplish what you wanted for the kick, but then you wont hear the snare very well. Take the time to mess with eq's and always cut unnecessary frequencies before boosting the fundamentals. Every kick or snare is different but take time to learn where sounds usually sit, kicks around 100 to 150hz, snares starting out around 250 or 300 and it will be your call to decide how much of the highs/mids/lows to leave in or take out for each sound, use your favorite tracks as an a-b reference to your track
