Question Dist808 Bass / DJ Vapour - is sampling a bass from an existing dnb song kosher? Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

So, i've been working on a nice layered dist808 bass for a new tune for hours now, and am at my wit's end. I've read forums, scoured samples, tweaked & retweaked EQ & fx, and I just can't dial it in.

I'm really trying to nail down that DJ Vapour / 36 Hertz sound heard in tunes like "Don't wanna See" Here's the tune:

I've layered a clean 808kick w/ a low shelf EQ and a dist808 sample, and a sub bass. Now, from what i've read, most folks hi-pass the dist808 and add on some more distortion fx.

Well, for the most part i can do that, and have it sound halfway decent, but its still lacking something esp. when compared to the sound i'm after.

Long story short, any ideas?

My LAST resort is to just sample the bass from the vapour song above. I've already pulled a clean sample just for comparison, but feel kinda dirty about sampling a vapour bass to make a vapour-inspired tune.

Thoughts / insights?

Never really tried to go for that sound, but I like the style (pitched down amens an distorted 808's) a lot.
Don't just exactly follow the guidelines they give you, just try and try.
It sounds to me like the distorted 808 has some cut-off filter action going on?
I wouldn't sample it, it's not "the way to do things" in DnB.
Therefore if you succeed to make your own copy you'll still have a copy Frown
I think the best thing to do is try to get somewhere near the original with your own flavour to it.

Been messing with it for a sec...

Good compression on the distorted version is really important and as a last step you need some saturation to get the harsh edge away.

This is not just distorted 808 bizznizz, this is really modern bass treatment.
I've sent the non distorted 808 to 1 mixer channel and the distorted version to 2 mixer channels and gave it the split bass treatment which is common for neurofunk tunes. That way you get a way more interesting sound.

I'm not getting anywhere near the DJ Vapour sound, but I'm not trying really hard Big Grin

@ CB / BD yea, i know sampling his bass is a bad idea Wink was just starting to get a little annoyed because I sampled it for comparison reasons - used his sample & my bassline & it sounds a mil times better than mine...

@ BD yea, i was starting to think there was more than just a dist808 goin on in there. It does def a bit of that neuro sound. I am not a big fan of neuro b/c of many failed attempts at producing it. Doped But, i digress, maybe half the battle is i don't understand what you mean when you say "Split bass treatment" I get sending the bass to 2 channels, but is one hi & one low passed? I recall u using FL studio before, do you mind sending me an FLP so i can take a look?

clear as day & easy as pie. Wink

minus dialing in all the effects to get the sound i'm looking for.

And, as always, having quality samples to start with is rule #1. luckily i've got plenty of those. If you're a fan of the vapour stylee why don't i toss you a PM w/ the rough of the track when i get it down. We can do a collab of sorts if you want, or at least get ur input.

BTW, I know Nitrous said "To All Hataz" has a meatalheadz flair to it, but i kinda
hear a little 36hrtz in there too Wink big tune!

I dunno what DAW you're on, but as long as it's not Reason you can get quite far with this:
Regular 808 kick.
the low end is easy, you know that.
the mids: hi pass at 250Hz, Some compression to thicken it, Some distortion (used CamelCrusher with tube on max and mech up 25%), and then Tone2 - Filterbank3 preset FIL Highpass (switch off the LFO's and the delay and then play with the filter frequency) and you'll Love what comes out!

Yea BD! That is sickness! I played with it a little using a clean 808, but I actually found a sample it works great with...

From the Surya sample pack found on this site! Bass060b.

I'm going to play with it more tomorrow, and dial in exactly what i'm lookin for.

Thanks for the help!

btw, i use FL stuido

Hell yea BD. Maybe this 36htz sounding tune? I've got a WIP called "mean little bastard" w/ some nice vocal samples from a movie. Wink

Its got the makings of a real big banger. tuned down amens, steppy break. some pads from a ray keith jungle pack.

Maybe this is more my style than it is yours?

That wasn't DnB he was making.

If you sample the main bass from somebody elses tune it's a rip off. Where's creativity when you steal the main identity of a tune in the same style? You might as well sample the whole tune, mash it up a bit and release it under your own name.

If you copy all 27 basses from another tune you simply made another jump up tune

@dLO: I was all in love with the JemOne sound and I do like some Vapour, Serum and Lutin. Them pitched down amens and street cred vocals really have massive energy. This is as close to the "true sound" as it gets at this point in time... Still love a big deal of Dillinja as well.
I have some project under construction in this style...

PM me.

All the pros used to sample each other back in the day, think tramens, terrorist reeses or dred basses, and they were far more creative back then than half the crap released now.

None of the sounds you mentioned originate from DnB...
DnB has the problem that a lot of things simply have been done and doing something fresh, new and creative isn't to be found in the obvious places.

I'm not really in love with minimal, drumstep and what not new shizzle comes out.

It wouldn't surprise me if the bass sound in that track was sampled from terrorist as well.

What does it matter where the sounds came from originally anyway? It seems like you're just trying to move the goalposts to me. I mean nobody went out and bought the x-static goldmine sample cds for the dred bass sound, that's presuming anybody knew it was a sample off there played backwards back then (before the internet), they just sampled dred bass instead. And the same can be said about the terrorist reese, nobody went out and bought just another chance so they could sample it and filter it like Ray Keith did, they just sampled terrorist. Which was what we were talking about, sampling dnb tunes, not where the sounds came from originally.

try looking on the 36hertz website, vapours done some production tips which im sure include his bass technique, what i can tell you is alot of the basses were pitched down kick drums, processed and split, and bounced etc etc. Im sure if you look on the site there still there, cool
