Anything done before 2000 was made on Cubase (mostly ran on Atari) and hardware synths and samplers... after that it's a wild guess.

It's not the gear that makes the tune, but making a tune "back in the days" was real labour, the learing curve was so steep that you needed to wear a helmet in the studio for your own safety. Slicing a break on a sampler back then was a nightmare and rearranging a break could take a day for 1 bar.

Most of the good sounds from the past were just lucky finds... pitched down stabs, kickdrums or bleeps suddenly turned into wicked basses,... Early DnB was all about cratedigging as there was no (real established) internet yet and downloading samplepacks wasn't an option.

I remember swapping shoeboxes full of floppy disks (5 1/4 inch ones) with a guy in the US back when I was making Techno, it took 2 whole weeks to get the package and it costed the same amount of money as todays Hi speed internet access.

Life sure was different back then.
I would love to travel back in time to 1990 with my current DAW. I would be THE STAR! Happy

ahh yes the frustrations of the akai sampler lol.
crate digging was the way forward back in t day.

old jazz funk records. goldies timeless uses mazes twilight for its pads.

deep Detroit house music - the archetypal reece basses that are so much a common place thing these days,
where stolen errr borrowed from tunes such as reese and santonios - rock to the beat and reese - just want another chance.

early drum and bass was a spin off from the 1987-1989 uk rave scene,
acid house lead to hardcore lead to jungle techno,
we lost the techno 4-to-the-floor bit and what was left was err jungle,
which is where we are today.
the dnb scene is nearing twenty years old and its still pushing forward.
not many music genres can say that these days.
mind you saying that the sooner we get back to a bukem vibe the better imo.

iv seen old school Jupiter 8s, prophet 5's n oscar synths
knocking about collecting dust in some of the boys set ups.

back t day you could make a mint from one record sale 25k +
then build up the studio like that,
with digital download etc,
you'll be lucky to make £500 from one tune these days,
its what they call progress i think.
