Has anyone got any tips on making soft feeling pads or Rhodes kind of sounds using Reason 3?

Any help is appreciated except 'use a sample', thanks

Big Grin New someone would say that. Left myself open to it with that comment.

I want to create my own sounds. It's a bit like everyone says 'Make your own Reece' so why not create your own pads? Surely they can't really be that difficult? But I don't seem to be able to get that soft sounding feel to them.

yeah seems like the reasons synths are not pad oriented, not enough richness in sound. apart from Thor though, I did a few mellow sounds in it, lots more control and possibilities compared tothe subtractor and malstrom. but you need to convert to version 4

outside of Reason, Absinth is good while being relatively simple to work with

the way i will build pads and strings
is to load up a fresh new project
add a combi and take a nice thor pad
tweak it a bit (workin at the destination tempo) then layer lots of other pads and strings in that go well, then resample and use in the nnxt like a synths of sorts, you can go mad and max out your cpu, have a fat sound, bounce 16 bars or 8 bars or whatever, then load it back in and it will be using the same ammount of cpu as a hi hat Big Grin

you can also look at presets for malstrom - pick the ones u like most or the ones that sound most similar to what ur lookin for, then have a look at how its made to get an idea, start from scratch or just tweak to taste Smile

Whatever sound you use, try a minor7 or a minor9 chord on it... gives you a really nice and full sound. You can do the same with major ofcourse.

use a synth:

PAD dynamics:

long attac, long decay, long sustain, long release

harmonics:

use whatever as wave(i prefer multiple forms for pads...), just filter out/tweak hard attacks n stuff

use a rich chord (very important to have a "full" sound)

the more modulations you make, the more textured it'll get, just don't create obvious dynamics (like in a kick or stab)

you -could- filter out the bands of organs you like,

EQ to flavor

maybe a bit of reverb, delay and other spice... (i recommend using 'sends' for this, to keep it nice 'n wet, and other usefull things...)

et voila

/e: 1 more tip: use polyphony and multiple voices

haha everyone starts talking about samples ... I try not use them so that I don't become dependent on them Smile

Try using the sine or triangle waveforms .. add a little FM to them if you want .. the sine waveform sounds like a bell if you add FM to it.
Go for higher octaves and chords that don't include black notes / accidentals, try chords like CEG etc... also if you are playing a chord like that in one octave, try play a note or few from that chord but in a higher octave, it'll sound nice ..
Waveform 11 is good, it's a voice sorta sound ..
Here's a patch I made a few weeks ago, try it out -
- Oscillator 1 = waveform 9, octave 5.
- Oscillator 2 = waveform 10, octave 3, cent -1.
- Frequency 32 (filter 1).
- Filter Envelope attack 127, amount 22, sustain 39, release 76.
- Amp Envelope attack 62, release 75.
- LFO rate sync, 2/4, amount 8.

This pad has got a nice drifting, dreamy sound to it .. try lowering the attack to make it seem 'closer' and also raise the frequency ...

Hope this helps you out!

ok listen to me...the best way to make a killer pad is to get some media that sounds awesome...like go through yor favorite movies and just look at the audio waveform and then select the coolest and most ambient sounds. Cut them out and then load them into Reason and put them in the NNXT then play with the samples envelope and reverse it and lower the octaves and reverb the hell out of them until you have an awesome and great sounding pad. You can also use the combinator to combine a great FM thor sound with the sample. Good luck bich.
