if you watch these, and try to follow along, the principles are the same. just a different knob layout. it's all about the EQ and compression when it comes to mastering plug-ins.

Am I the only one who finds the FL mastering video rubbish?
It should've at least been mentioned that the 'Soundgoodizer' is simply 4 presets of the Maximus plugin (which doesn't come for free with FL)

And apart from that, they'd better spend some time telling us about compression instead of what presets to use for which sounds :-/

Anyways, thanks for sharing!

was just about to write that...

I mean, compressor, soundgoodizer and limiter at once is pretty shit...as well as the reason the poster gives for the chain that the limiter at the end is necessary to prevent the tune go past 0 db. soundgoodizer and the comp should have already done so but anyway...

I think putting randomly plugins on a master is no mastering. Quite confusing that it got so good rates at yt.

Yeah, it is a piece of turd. No technicality whatsoever. :/

well it's not weird to have a light compressor before a limiter. it acts like a light reverb. it's a sort of glue, to stick it all together. it's not to increase gain as much as to bring everything to a more average dynamic range. so if it's to hard, it'll kill the dynamics, and then after the limiter, it'll kill it more. so a light compressor brings up some of the quiet, without stopping the louder parts.

where as the limiter is to bring everything up to a reasonable level, more for volume then style.

at least that's how i would see it.

but soundgoodizer is just preset of the Maximus Multiband Maximizer, so he used the same plugin on there twice.

sounds plausible. I usually just use slight compression on the master and get the desired (loud or not) volume by setting the compressors output gain. actually worked for me...

I always thought that you gotta make the decision weather to compress or to limit and found doing both a bit weird but when thinking twice about it, it may be not the worst thing to do.

Hmm, FL vid was pure toss... Ah well, I think mastering is something which isnt so easily summerised in a ew minutes of youtube quality audio.

One thing, I dunno about putting an EQ after a compressor, multiband or otherwise.. Why compress frequencies which you are then later gonna remove or boost. Surely that means your compressor is compensating for Frequencies which are undesirable anyway?? I dunno, maybe Im wrong, Could someone explain the logic behind it?

if you mix everything right, you shouldn't need a multi-band compressor. it should already be there in the mix, and the compression should act like a bit of glue, and the limiter the finishing. if you don't have enough bass, you don't turn up the multiband compession for more lows, you EQ/compress it separately. . . Or just throw a cat in a microwave and turn it on high for 10 minutes.

Hmm that's not how I see it...

A compressor will make sounds that are too silent louder, and sounds that are too loud more silent.
A pad synth could be a combination of sounds in a wide range of frequencies, if you compress you could do this:
50hz-350hz :
Threshold: -10dB (compression applies to a decent amount of sounds)
Ratio: 8:1 (compress to a tight level of loudness)
Attack: 10ms (so it's not too muddy)
Release: 100ms (not too muddy)
Knee: Hard (not too muddy)

All sounds from -10dB and louder will be treated so that if they are x dB away from the compression loudness, they will be reduced or increased to x/8 dB away from that loudness. The attack and release will be fast so the compression is in effect almost immediately when the sounds play.

That's how I interpreted the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_level_compression
