I fucking love this. Fucking LOVE this. I can definitely see the inspiration in this from Source Direct. You definitely ought to create more tunes like this man, that old school sound. You are fucking genius at it. Tons of subtle variety in this, love that. The one and only thing I would suggest is layering one more type of drum beat over it, however its not completely necessary. Source Direct I know uses fairly minimalistic drum patterns. Keep at this man, I would sincerely buy this.

Layering 11-02-2011 20:40 Forum: Production questions & answers

To get that heavy, hard hitting sound, try layering various kicks/snares/ assortment of glitchy noises over your breaks, I general have four or five different sounding layers over one particular break or pattern. It really helps. Also, try using a high-pass filter on your drum breaks towards the beginning of your tracks, and then when the bass drops let all hell loose.

That bass drum kick in the first 25 seconds might be coming in a bit too hard. Or maybe you like the sound, it depends on personal preference I guess. Took me by surprise. That first reese at :44 is pretty fucking great, might even sound better with some a reverb/chorus on it, play around with it, make it louder and more in your face. Your other bass (wobble bass?? not sure) at 1:10 could use some sort of effects on it, perhaps phasing. Sounds a bit too clean, slightly boring. Really like the sample/vocal though, keep that. Honestly, just move on from the track, come back to it in a few weeks and see how you feel about it then.

donnybrook - Kickbeat 05-02-2011 01:32 Forum: Tunes

Please check out my new track 'Kickbeat' and post your comments here!

I've been sitting on this beat for over 6 months... and I really don't want to see it go to waste. I don't really know how to improve upon it, I'll take any suggestions. Very minimal, only used four separate tracks; drum break, bass, single phased synth-line and an intro-line. Its a definite work-in-extremely-delayed-progress. Hasn't had much mastering or equing work on it, but I really don't want to bail on this one. Honestly, if you don't think its worth the time feel free to say so. Maybe its one only a mother could love. Any and all criticism is accepted. If anybody wants to play with it I can email it to them or I can add you to my dropbox at chortiz11@gmail.com Cheers!

Good beat, real proper bassline. Way to change it up man, not like anything I have heard you post before. Really digging this. What are you using to do your basses? Jealous! Love that drop around 2:30, thats just great. Have nothing to say about this track other then that you are doing a great job. Keep it up.

Is the hiss only coming up on your tracks? Might be exporting in really low quality... what are you current export settings?

Dark man, really emotional. Its got a downer sort of vibe on it, really into that. But seriously its a downer. Don't get me wrong its good, but definitely a big fucking downer... like listening to the Elliot Smith of drum and bass right fucking here. You feeling alright lately? Got me worried man! Definitely one of your more darker, emotional choons that I have heard you put out. Understand its a work in prog, I'd like to hear what you come up with when you are finished.

This being one of your first attempts, it wasn't horribly bad. It definitely needs a considerable amount of work though. One of the major things that you need to work on are you drum breaks. Try downloading some new break samples and play around with them. If you are using FL Studio open up a new channel with Fruity Slicer and drag a break in, analyze the structure and toy around with it. Heres a link to some good, simple breaks that would be great to start practicing with. http://www.junglebreaks.co.uk/breaks.html

Cheers man.

Thanks for the responses, its been almost over 8 months since I last posted a song I believe... been quite a while. Love that you guys got back to me so quick! Great community up on here. Anyways, I was aiming for a bit of an old school jungle sort of sound but with a twist of glitch and decided to roll with it. I was definitely looking use more bass though, but I couldn't really find a sound that went too well with the song. I experimented with a few different reese basses but they aren't really my forte and didn't sound as nicely as I hoped they would. Speaking of which, anybody have a link to a good reese tutorial? Oh and I'm definitely going to be layering some more snares over my current beat, want to go for that harder sound, but still keep it older sounding.

Take A Few Days Off! 01-02-2011 12:05 Forum: Production questions & answers

Try taking a break, just a few days. For a few months straight I was trying to produce new tunes every day and I started sounding flat and all my songs sounded dull and similar. I took a few day break and first song I worked on back was a stomper. Sometimes your creativity needs a break. Also, occasionally I'll pickup the guitar and just mess around for a bit. Variation in music helps.

You have great breaks man. Not too big of a fan of that initial wub-bass though. But :23+ is just fucking fantastic, that sounds amazing, and again at :44. Good track idea, keep working at it. Needs a bit more variation towards the end, but I understand that its just a rough idea. Look forward to seeing the completed version. What are you using to produce? I have a bass-line that I programmed that might sound great in this tune. Got a dropbox?

Drums are coming through nice and crisp. Those are great. Might try decompressing that synth at 0:44. Sounds a bit to "crushed" if you get what I'm saying. Overall great flow though. Might want to switch up the wobble bass-line a bit more, try bitcrushing it or turning up the gain, or possibly dropping it down more into the sub-range. Great job over all though. Really enjoy that part at 2:40, that I would re-use in a different track if you aren't planning on releasing this one or working on it anymore. Intro is cool too, keep that part too.

Really into that smooth part at 1:44, thats just brilliant. Smooth clean feel. Same sort of feeling at 2:44, that drop is amazing. It gave me the chills a bit to be honest. Intro is a bit slow, make it darker. 0:22+ is great though.

Anybody know how I can replicate that intro pad/ambient noise that starts right from the beginning 0:00
Thought it would be easy but I have no presets/synths/pads/anything even close to it and I can't figure out how to replicate it!
