This is not a nice thing to do, but it would solve most of the burden of maintaining the site and it is still better than having the site disappear completely. Then I can move the site to a cheap VPS and it might continue to live for another 10 years.

What do you guys think? Would a forum without new people be unacceptable? Or do you think there is still value in keeping the forum online for people to perhaps learn something in its many pages of producing wisdom?

This sounds good to me. Or at least a lot better than closing the whole forum.

Science Helsinki Podcast - Episode #25: Puzzle guest mix 15-10-2011 14:49 Forum: DJ Mixes

Science started as a Helsinki-based drum 'n' bass all-nighter at Bar Loop,
ran now by four guys - Trisector, VVR, St. Laurent and Axu - sharing a common interest on alternative takes how DNB could be displayed to different audiences.
Playing records all the way through from the obscure jungle era to the
new minimal techno influenced sound, the scientists try to reach for an
interesting mixture of atmospherics via drums and basslines.

The Loop era ended after two fun years leaving us planning for the next step and banging our heads to the beats presented in our podcast. To summarize the idea, our podcast will consist of ingredients like:
- Fresh dubs from the likeminded fellows in Finland and abroad
- New and free releases from producers too stubborn to admit that pop
music sells better
- Older tunes that sound like they were made either in 2050 or recorded
in a stairway with a casio mic by a big delusional guy on crack
- Some odd non-DNB tunes that might or might not have something to do
with the stuff we play
- Submarine tragedies

Science Hki #25 - Puzzle

This time the guest mix comes from a promising young new producer from Finland. Puzzle started making his own music at the age of 13. Three years later he's had his first release out on Lifestyle Recordings and now we're proud to present his first mixtape. Enjoy.

Do you have DirectWave?

It has some wicked looping possibilities, try fiddling with it. Smile

If the bass is nice and the drums are nice the tune doesn't really even need anything else to it in my opinion.
But to keep the tune interesting you could have some jazzy piano chords coming in every once in a while, or maybe some modulated vocals.

Or pads.

Hey guys, big thanks for the reviews. Smile

@shir_pan: Yeah man I think a more characteristic bass is needed.. Maybe something similar to the one on Doubts by Naibu Drool

@virtual_riot: Thanks Smile Yeah I wasn't going for a very powerful drop, just wanted a nice tune that would roll happily ever after... Or at least until the outro. Big Grin

@Impact: Cheers mate Smile
Getting a vocalist to sing on this so your fantasy just might become true if all goes well Big Grin
I have Fruity Compressor + Fruity Limiter on the mixer.. I mainly just use FL's native plugins atm.
And yeah I have sidechained the bass with the kick, made it very subtle tho, on average the bass runs below the kick anyway.

@Battle: I can't hear any crackling at least when I listen to the original (non-dotbe-downgraded-version) on my computer.
The drums are going up and down in volume a bit tho and that is due to too much compression/limiting, I'll sort it out. Smile
And yeah I'm going to make a second drop to this. A short symbolic drop just to let the DJ mix into the next tune (yes, sorry I do think of DJ's when making tunes Frown haha).

Big Grin

Thanks a lot for the reviews.

Puzzle - Plans 2011 14-03-2011 11:56 Forum: Tunes

Please check out my new track 'Plans 2011' and post your comments here!

Ez dotbe.

This is a liquidy roller I've started working on again after a long break. I uploaded an early version of this on .be about 6 months ago,
and it has changed a lot since then. The structure and the basic idea are completely different.

My main concern at the moment is the mixdown/mastering, I've tried pumping the volume as much as I can but it still seems very powerless and quiet compared to professional tunes (and even my own tunes)...

All feedback greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Juho Puzzle Bigup

I have to say I haven't heard the original so I don't know how much you've used the original stems...

The drums are massive and the whole vibe is great, not much to complain about.. The drums get pushed back by the bass sometimes, that's the only problem I noticed Smile

Nice intro man, excellent sounds. Not a fan of the pattern the horns play tho haha. +The crash cymbals need to go imo.

Nice vibes at the drop mate, just needs some more power! Some more equing and maybe another layer on the snare and youre sorted. Smile

Some nice ideas in there man. Liking the double bass action, although you don't really seem to have a key, just lots of different notes playing everywhere haha. Overall this is really messy, you need to rearrange all the elements imo. But it's not a bad place to start Smile

There's not much going on, but I'll try and review what's there.

Drums. Good basic sounds, the snare and the kick both need some punch (maybe another layer) and the whole beat needs more percussions/hihats to keep it rolling.

Main bassline (the sub) gets boring very quickly, you only used two notes.. Same for the squeaky lead in the background.
The growly basses that come in every once in a while are pretty cool tho. Maybe just salvage those and start a new tune with them Smile

Intro's really not my cuppa tea, it's too empty overall and the drums sound very thin and quite boring. Once the tune picks up momentum I quite like it tho, fun vibes! The whole tune needs some warmth, imo it's remaster o'clock for you Battle mate. Big Grin

Nice intro man, also really feeling the dub influence! Drummer

Dunno if this is really that minimal tbh, you have lots of stuff going on (or at least it really sounds like that), all works very smoothly, great work.

The mixdown/mastering sounds pretty cold, I reckon it needs a small bump in the midrange. Smile
