for live performance? I found FL to be difficult to navigate around (though I am a Reason user so anything else is going to be a challenge)

I will play around with it more. What I am aiming for is to make sample sets for myself for the NNXT.

Synths... Access, Roland... 20-02-2008 07:17 Forum: Hardware

Okay.. Access Virus Polar TI... If I could afford it the thing would already be here. I have played it and really like it.

Juno D and SH201 are serious considerations.

What other synths are worth it? The Access Virus TI Desktop... any other synth modules similar to this one?

I want good waveforms (especially sawtooth) and various forms of synthesis.

I can always sample and continue to use NNXT, but I would like to have a hardware synth.

I auditioned the tune in my car today (wicked subs) and the low mids, bass and sub bass where definately fighting for space. The reece needs to be crunchier, and the vocal sample completely disappeared. So I obviously have mixing issues.

hp... i took your advice and just scrambled to finish the song. but i have not finished it... gotta sleep stayed up till 2 am making patches last night... but i got further into it than all the others... about 65 others to be exact. i left room for vocals and wrote down the drop line and already know an amen is going to be used for the beat. now all i gotta do is find a singer. maybe ya'll get to hear something.

i just began two songs... one has some real potential and i have part of the automation done.

the other one i was working on today for someone hip-hop project... but it ended up being a dark, concord dawn like dnb tune. so i doubt the guy wants this song. i'm keeping it Big Grin

i guess i am just really into making things too difficult.

Song Form 13-09-2007 03:13 Forum: Production questions & answers

How do you guys settle on a format for your song? I am not asking for suggestions but more of how do you arrive at your form.

I start off with an idea then i build drums, basses, noises, textures and can end up with a great number of tracks. Then I audition different tracks with each other and make notes of what really has a good feel or transition point.

i just can't settle on a final structure... which is way none of you have heard any tracks from me.

Music theory is applied to most of my stuff so randomness really doesn't work too well. Rondo form is something i really like but i haven't figured out how to make this work with drum'n'bass. (Rondo basically has contrasting themes which go back and forth then in the middle there is a long contrasting section then it returns to the contrasting themes... think of it like this: 1213121)

so... how do you arrive at your song form?

ReCycle Tips 29-08-2007 05:57 Forum: Production questions & answers

now as i write this i am working on a remix. i do not have the individual tracks available to me all i have is the album and the song from it. luckily the is a good instrumental part in the beginning... just the main guitar line... then the whole band... there is even a section with just vocals... and the ending has a nice hit on the last note.

so i am trying to chop it up and discovered some very helpful information.

when chopping a sample that has more than one element. in my case there are guitars, drum kit and bass guitar. the guitars are together as well as the bass... i first had to place markers at each drum hit ( ride, kick, snare, crashes) though i needed to manually mark the slice points and listen rather than rely on the sensitivity slider.

then i had to slice where the guitar strums are since the guitar played divisions of time that the drums did not.

this means my drums stayed in time and so did the guitars.

i then did the same for a section that had voX as well. i did what i just mentioned but did the same for the words... listened then placed slice markers at each word and syllable.

i used the pressurize compressor setting to smooth it out a bit. now i just need to zoom in and get everything as close to zero-crossing as possible (meaning the slice is on a point where the waveform crosses the 0dB line)

hope this helps.

it probably 27-08-2007 00:47 Forum: Hardware

could be used to make good starting points, then recorded and use samples from it, load into an NNXT and go from there. elaborate but thats how some cats do it.

i could get that and still have enough left over for Sound Forge 9 and some really quality effects units or plug ins. i am working some crazy huge trigger pads for integration with my drum kit.

or i could blow it all on a Virus Desktop TI... which i will probably never use enough to justify the price.

any good? i have read it makes killer bass sounds. Reason is my weapon of choice so the hardware world is foreign to me.

$175 was the price offered to me. if works should i get it?

loop it?

i used loops instead of a click track when i laid down some drum tracks.

loops help me get ideas down.

chop it up use part of it for a completely new idea.

loop it? Tongue

then allow me to correct myself... do not edit, mix, eq, master on headphones unless you are very familiar with them.

i am a hypocrite... today i rewired a song into nuendo and began eq'ing and mixing ON HEADPHONES! i have a pair of audio technica 30 series... i have no idea how much they cost but they have good freq response and are isolating.

something i've been doing to make sure i don't overdo anything is i check my tracks to my favorite producers songs. so i listen to alot of london elektrcity and logistics to see if i have anything way out of wack. so far stuff has turned out ok... but i wouldn't say it doesn't need any mastering.

I dont really think any of this is mastering except compression and peak limiting...Not trying to argue just talking on it... The whole point of mastering is that they do compression etc in a very controlled and familiar environment which they know with highly expensive and specialised equipment. The Mix Engineer will be mixing in a room with a mixing desk and other equipment which causes standing waves and other such barriers to creating a perfect mix...If you cant take the room out of the mix you cant take the mix out of the room. Thats what mastering engineers do...

IMO Happy

agreed... which is why you can hear an album that has not been mastered and think it sounds great. mastering is the icing on the cake.

and someone said eq'ing is a bitch... let me add that you should never eq using headphones! some of you like myself might work in restricting environments soundwise which means you need to use headphones. wait until you can get to a place that you can use good moniters and a good room and lots of time.

*this is why most of my tracks are not out for listening... except for the couple on myspace which i mixed similarly to Logistics, he uses very little effects and a bit of correctional eqing and from i understood not alot of mastering.

i am a guitarist, if you want you can email the file to me and i can chop it up for you in recycle. if you are not comfortable doing this i understand. on a couple of new tracks i am working on i have had get very creative with my guitar phrases, especially the odd meter bits i've thrown in.

let me know if you like this idea.
