I should still have a copy somewhere, but where?? Confused

I don't know if this is still really relevant though, this was a very old school sample pack, just a couple hundred wavs in a folder, so it takes ages to scan through and set up.

I changed my mind again Big Grin I can't just pull the trigger on this, I love this old horse way too much. I have now moved the forum to one of my other servers. Unfortunately the music and the other parts of the site had to be deleted, but these were hardly ever used anymore, everybody is on Soundcloud anyway.

The forum can spend its last years quietly in retirement here. At least people can still look at all the great info on producing that has been written in the forum, and if any of you still feel like having a chat then feel free to do so! I'll surely be around!

But I won't open up registrations again... I'm sorry but that's really out of the question, I want to live my life in peace. And hopefully I can use the free time I get now to work on cool new projects Big Grin

Hey guys, money is not the problem, so a fundraising would not help Big Grin

I just can't spare the time to maintain this site any more. I have a total burnout after running this site for over 10 years. You don't want to know how many countless hours I have spent on this Wink I really can not do it any more. Really some mails you get from people can make you tear your hair out of frustration and anger, I have spent thousands of euros over the years to make this site available for free for everyone who wants to use it and all I get in return is hate and abuse. There really is no turning back anymore, this feeling has been growing for several years. The site is also beyond salvation, it is based on technology of 10 years ago. Stuff like the spam problem is not fixable unless major changes are made.

But I must say that since I have blocked the registrations that the time needed to run this has practically dropped to zero. I get almost no mails or PMs any more and there are no spammers Smile Life is good again Big Grin

I don't feel it is an option to keep the forum open, and I'm not going to spend hours building an anti spam system which will be ineffective anyway. Nowadays spammers can use services that solve captchas by real humans.

Also, with new users come new problems. I really don't want to spend the rest of my life answering mails for people who are unable to find a registration mail in their spam folder or who use throwaway mail accounts to register and then forget their passwords. Or get insulted because people think they have some kind of god given right to upload tracks without having to write any reviews. I'm also sometimes getting requests of people that want to close their accounts forever because they moved on, and that is really depressing.

I want to build new things, not keep supporting this sinking ship. It has become a huge burden for me, and this feeling has been growing for a long time. I feel like I'm doing an uphill battle for a platform that is losing relevance every day. And while there are fewer posts and fewer tracks posted, the burden of the maintenance remains the same.

When I got the notice that the server OS was no longer supported this was like something clicked in me, this was like a wake up call. But on the other hand I've spent so many hours on this over the past 10 years that this feels like I am going to murder my own baby. I'm really torn now.

BTW I have just received a DMCA takedown notice over some copyright infringement on the site, this is like the final straw. I'm in a very dark mood now, I'll think about it for a few more days.

Guys thanks for all your kind words and PMs Happy I really appreciate it, I never thought there still was so much interest and I don't seem to be the only one who has really fond memories of the site.

I'm am now doubting my decision and there maybe is a way that I can keep dnbbe online for a few more years. But first let's set some things straight.

  • I can no longer afford to run the site in its current form, not money wise, but time wise. Objectively it does not take THAT much time (like 2-3 hours per week), but the truth is that I have been doing this for 10 years, and it is really starting to have an effect on me. I can't continue doing this forever. It has become a really boring routine: answering the same questions over and over, changing passwords or email adresses, removing tracks, checking for the 10000th spammer, ... I'm tired, really tired Frown This is the most important thing for me, if the site would continue to exist then it should not need my continuous attention any more.
  • The server is now many years old and the software (CentOS 4) no longer gets security updates. This means that the server *will* be hacked, and this can happen any moment. The server needs to be shut down as soon as possible, no question about it.
  • The current hosting is too expensive for what the site actually needs. I pay for 1000GB of transfer per month, which was needed when the site was very popular. But the site's popularity has gone down and now needs only 100GB per month. So I am wasting 90% of the capacity, which is ridiculous. So, we need to change hosting.
  • The server is old. Because the site has few visitors it still works really well and it could still last for many years. But as it ages there is a bigger chance that something will break (eg a hard disk, a cooling fan, ...). There is also this problem that it is located in Amsterdam, which is 4 hours driving for me. I'd love to get rid of it and move to a VPS, this would be a much more modern, reliable and cheaper solution.
  • The site is too big, which is making a move to a cheaper and more practical hosting impossible. It currently has 44GB of mp3s, most of which haven't been listened to in years. In the early years of the website this was a wonderful feature but nowadays there is Soundcloud which is much better. So all the music has to go. Same for the sample packs.

So I am now thinking of getting rid of everything except the forum (and maybe the top 100 of best songs for old times sake). And I would lock the forum, so that only the existing members can still log in but no new members would be accepted any more. This is not a nice thing to do, but it would solve most of the burden of maintaining the site and it is still better than having the site disappear completely. Then I can move the site to a cheap VPS and it might continue to live for another 10 years.

What do you guys think? Would a forum without new people be unacceptable? Or do you think there is still value in keeping the forum online for people to perhaps learn something in its many pages of producing wisdom?

This is NOT the end. Dnbbe will NOT be taken offline soon. 29-03-2012 13:20 Forum: Drumnbass.be news

I'm sad to announce that I will close down dnbbe soon. The server is now very old and needs a major overhaul, and I don't have the time or motivation to do this anymore.

The sad truth is that the site is showing it's age and most of the producers have long left for better and more modern sites. This shows in the lack of tracks that are being uploaded, and the small amount of forum posts. On the other hand even though the site has been getting fewer visitors the number of spammers has dramatically increased, up to the point that we now have several hundreds of spam registrations per week. This has been taking its toll and I now no longer think it is worthwhile to keep the site online.

I had the idea to get rid of all the mp3's, sample packs etc and then move the forum to a cheap VPS, but even this would take me many hours of work which I really can't spare at the moment.

It has been a wonderful time, it's incredible that the site has lasted this long, it's been online for a decade now and many great discussions have been held, and a huge amount of excellent music has been shared. I'd like to thank all members for the awesome time we had, and a huge thanks goes out to Surya, Muad'Dib and the other moderators, and especially Battledrone who has single handedly kept the site alive for the last couple of years.

So long guys, it's been a blast, hope to see you all some time again on the wide internet!

Great new cymbal sample pack available 08-08-2011 20:13 Forum: Drumnbass.be news

There is a new sample pack available in the samples page containing lots of cymbals: mostly crashes but also a few hihats and rides. These are all new samples, never heard before, get them while they're fresh Big Grin

I recorded the cymbals, and Surya did all the hard work of selecting the best ones and chopping them up in easily digestible wav bites Bigup

Enjoy!!!

I deleted the bad version. You can try uploading it again.

I'm a bit puzzled why this speedup has happened, this has to my knowledge never happened before. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the sample rate was not right, can you please check if the mp3 is at 44.1kHz sample rate?

If the problem persists, contact me in PM so we can find a solution!!

A blog would be nice but the question is always: who's going to write the content?? We have something like a blog already (articles) but with an average of 1 article per year it's no wonder nobody looks at it.

Also I tried to keep up with writing front page posts, but it takes a lot of effort and the last one is already months ago. I also closed down the myspace page not so long ago as it was over a year since the last update.

Anyway I'm all up for turning the front page of the site into a blog, if you have a good article or news item I'll post it up there right away Smile

No worries, you did not break any rules. You can post your Soundcloud tunes even if you don't have producer rights.

It's only when uploading songs here that you need producer rights Wink
